Why Not Even Trump Tariffs Can Undermine Land Rover

Land Rover, like so many other motor manufacturers, is facing a conundrum following the announcement of 25 per cent tariffs on all car exports to the US. However, nobody should underestimate the value of a brand that has captured the hearts of motorists across the globe for decades.

Although Land Rover initially responded to the news by suspending exports to the US, it is hard to know whether the tariffs will stick, following the climbdown of a 90-day delay in higher tariffs announced by the orange man in the White House.

However, what may have been overlooked in Washington is the sheer popularity of Land Rover around the globe, which is exactly why there is such demand for used Land Rover engines, as enthusiasts seek to repair and revive older models.

Indeed, while America may be closed to Land Rovers just now, other markets are growing. In India, Jaguar Land Rover has just recorded 40 per cent growth in the last financial year, its best ever results in the 17 years it has been operating in the country, Hindu Business Line reports. This included 90 per cent growth for the Defender.

Of course, growth in India isn’t about to make up the shortfall in the US, which is worth £6.5 billion a year, but it shows that Land Rover will find many other ways to thrive. Besides, if, as many expect, the tariffs policy soon collapses, they will be back in America before long.

Moreover, Jaguar Land Rover’s latest results reveal it has delivered on its aim of removing its debt, which is a timely piece of news on the financial front. But such an achievement is only possible because it continues to produce the same quality it always has – the quality that means models made decades ago are frequently and lovingly restored.
