Land Rover enthusiasts will be nostalgic about the manufacturer’s hugely popular model, the Freelander, and may even have one or two in their own collection. So, they are bound to be very excited to see it making a return to the market, but this time as an electric vehicle (EV).
The Freelander first launched in the late-1990s and was an instant hit among car buyers. It was designed to have a monocoque body construction like other contemporary cars of the time, but still stronger and more rigid than them.
As such, it was a cross between an off-road vehicle and a more functional family car. As it was both so reliable and functional, it became the best-selling four-wheel-drive in Europe for five years in a row.
Well, now the car is coming back, as JLR and Chery have agreed to create Freelander EVs in China.
The CJLR project will develop modern EVs under the Freelander name, giving the cars the reputation and appeal of the prestigious brand.
Chairman of the Chery Group Yin Tongyue is very excited about the collaboration, saying it will give consumers a “unique electric vehicle experience”, thanks to Chery’s advanced EV technology and the Freelander’s legacy.
Unfortunately for Land Rover fans in the UK, the new Freelanders will only be available for sale in China initially. However, it is hoped they will be exported internationally if sales do well.
Of course, being able to buy second-hand vehicles and get help from Land Rover rebuild specialists who can make them run as smoothly as they did back in the day, means that anyone can get their hands on an original Land Rover Freelander if they want to.
