A couple from Teeside have told of how their prized Land Ever Defender was gutted by a recent fire, which has been estimated to cause £10,000 worth of damage.
Teeside Live reports that the fire was discovered by neighbours at 2.30 am on Sunday 2 January, who immediately raised the alarm, notifying the owners of the Defender and the Cleveland Fire Brigade.
The couple from Guisborough, to the east of Middlesborough, and who wished to remain anonymous, said that the huge fire damaged an extension to their property, caused a gas leak, and destroyed their prize Land Rover Discovery.
They said they are ‘counting their lucky stars’ that no one was hurt in the incident.
The anonymous man said he was woken by his partner at 2.55 am to be told that the hedge was on fire, while simultaneously, neighbours were ‘banging on the door’ to raise the alarm.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, has told how the huge blaze caused damage to their house extension, destroyed their Land Rover and caused a gas leak during the early hours of the morning.
“They had rang [sic] the fire brigade 10 minutes before we were aware of what was going on,” he said.
Strong winds complicated matters, shifting the blaze across the drive, towards cars and the house extension. One of the cars was able to be moved out of harm’s way, but the Defender was closer to the hedge and was taken by the fire quickly.
“Our Land Rover is completely beyond salvaging,” he said, adding that he and his partner were still ‘shocked and upset’ from the blaze.
“We’re now just picking up the pieces but there’s only so much we can do, and we’re assessing the total damage.”
The couple estimates the damage to be around £10,000.
