JLR Helps 650 Employees’ Families To Safety

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been helping its employees with families in the Ukraine escape the conflict, following the recent invasion of Russian troops.

The BBC reported JLR, , a manufacturing facility in neighbouring nation Slovakia, has 650 workers with relatives in the war-torn country.

A memo, seen by BBC Radio CWR, revealed they have been contacted about being given support to evacuate, with the company confirming its “first priority” is to ensure the wellbeing of its employees and their families.

The first lot of escapees were taken to Slovakia over the weekend and is now trying to provide them with financial support, childcare, jobs and psychological aid.

JLR has also stopped sales of its cars to Russia in a bid to impose sanctions on the country and deter them from pursuing further attack on Ukraine.

A spokesperson for the company, which is based in Whitley, Coventry, stated: “The current global context also presents us with trading challenges so we are pausing the delivery of vehicles into the Russian market and continually monitoring the situation on behalf of our global customer base.”

It sold nearly 7,000 vehicles to Russia in 2021, with its Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Defender cars most likely made in its 74-acre manufacturing site in Nitra, Slovakia.

The 300,000-square-metre facility opened in 2018, marking a “new era in manufacturing” for the company, and followed the launch of facilities in China, Brazil, India, and Austria. It has the capacity of producing 150,000 vehicles a year, thanks to the use of cutting-edge technologies.
