From vintage series 1 models to the more recent iterations, there’s something wonderfully nostalgic yet rugged about a classic Land Rover Defender.
The last of the old-shape Defenders rolled off the Solihull line just over 10 years ago and fewer secondhand models are available each year. It’s no wonder that these tank-like off-roaders are a favourite for vehicle restoration projects.
What to look for when purchasing a vehicle for restoration
Before you purchase a dud that will never run, there are some key pitfalls to avoid.
Rust and corrosion
If it doesn’t have good bones, it is a no-go for a restoration. Check the chassis, wheel arches, floor pans and joins for rust; some rust can be handled, but some will cost you a fortune in structural repairs.
Watch out for an undercarriage that has been recently painted; it might be covering rust and holes. Another one to avoid is cars that have had a lot of filler applied in repairs. Filler does not have the integrity and strength of the original aluminium alloy bodywork.
Availability of parts
For Defenders, Jaguar Land Rover is still producing many of the essential parts, and the market for second-hand parts from stripped vehicles is extensive.
But if your car of choice is little more than a shell, then finding and fitting parts may become an expensive full-time job.
Check the engine
A task that might require help from a more experienced Defender enthusiast or specialist mechanic is checking the engine.
Compression testing and leak-down testing can give you an idea of whether the engine is a runner or needs more than a little TLC. Of course, the best test is to drive it yourself.
Is a new engine necessary for an old Defender?
The engine is the heartbeat of the Defender, and making sure you have one in tip-top condition can make all the difference in getting your restoration project on the road.
Jaguar Land Rover still has a V8 petrol in its stable of engines, but buying from a manufacturer can be a big expense.
With a large secondhand market for Defenders, you can be sure to find a used or reconditioned Rover V8 engine for sale that will suit your budget.
An expertly stripped and reconditioned Land Rover engine can keep your project running for many more years.
