Is Fixing An Old Defender Better Than Waiting For A New One?

Some Land Rover fans might be interested in the upcoming revamped Defender, but others will prefer to upgrade an older model, which may include a change of engine to a reconditioned V8.

The first hints of a new Defender were revealed by Autoevolution, which described it as a “proper mid-cycle refresh” of the 2019 model.

It offered some imagination as to the exact details of what was concealed under the “trippy vinyl stickers” when the prototype was given a public spin.

The new features that the 2027 (or possibly 2028) version is meant to have include:

·       A Front fascia with new graphics and daytime running lights

·       A “chunkier bumper”

·       Repositioned reflectors and “tweaked taillights” on the rear

The article acknowledged that it is not clear whether this new model will have anything dramatically different under the bonnet, although there is “word on the street” that the current five-litre 493 hp V8 could be replaced with a 4.4 L V8 that offers 520 Hp.

Some may be quite excited by the changes, but others may still prefer the original 2019 model, especially given a chance to revamp it with a new engine.

However, you might want to go further. The 2019 model was one of the newer Defenders, but there have been previous editions dating back decades.

What Kind Of Work Might An Older Land Rover Defender Require?

The kind of model that may really prompt excitement may be something like a vehicle advertised for sale in Land Rover Monthly.

Whether the new owner would be keen to introduce a new engine or not, the 1996 Defender, with 214,000 miles on the clock, was described by the owner as already needing a few fixes:

·       The vehicle has oversized tyres that need to be replaced or have spacers fitted so they don’t rub

·       The fuel filler cap lock is broken

·       There are “bumps and creases” on the panels

·       The roof “has seen better days”

The prospect of a new Defender can prompt curiosity, but for those who love to take an older model and bring it back to pristine condition, some things can prompt a lot more interest and excitement.
