Exciting news for car fanatics everywhere – it’s looking as though there may well be a new Land Rover Defender V8 taking to the streets relatively soon, if the rumours are to be believed, in any case.
According to Car Buzz’s own spy photographers, the car manufacturer has been testing a Defender prototype that appears to be the new 100 V8, resembling a typical Defender 110 but with a quad exhaust system with squared tips and a large muffler… suggesting that there may well be a surprise or two on the horizon in the near future.
The news source has taken this as confirmation that Jaguar Land Rover is working on a new Defender V8, since the company only fits V8 engines with quad exhaust systems.
It went on to suggest that the vehicle will use the 5-litre supercharged V8 that can be found in the Range Rover Sport SVR, but this unit is likely to be phased out at the end of 2020. So it’s possible that BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 could be a good alternative.
Jaguar Land Rover and BMW recently collaborated on powertrain development, initially only discussing electric power but then deciding on a bigger deal involving hybridised and petrol diesel drivelines.
The first BMW engine being used in a Land Rover vehicle was in the latter’s Ford-produced V8 – but the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from BMW will also be used in a new version of the Defender… the Defender SVR.
