A charity for armed services veterans in Andover, Hampshire, is close to completing a rebuild of a Land Rover Defender 110s, thanks to a grant received from the National Lottery Commission Fund.
The Andover Advertiser reports that the charity organisation Veterans in Action, which aims to help veterans through adventures and expeditions using off-road vehicles such as the Defender, were granted £10,000 in October to rebuild the Land Rovers.
The iconic off-road vehicles are being rebuilt by the group at the Alive Centre near Salisbury Plain close to Andover.
A spokesperson for Veterans in Action said the project would always present a challenge, and it already had many ups and downs, but that was nothing new for the veterans working on the rebuild.
“Veterans In Action use their own unique ALIVE Programme which takes a non-therapy long term approach to veterans mental health, to help veterans and their families grow at their own pace through participation on the projects run at the ALIVE Centre or off-site in the surrounding area or on long-distance expeditions, which make this a unique rebuild,” they said.
The spokesperson added that the opportunity to work together on such a project not only pulls together the skies and expertise of the veterans but also helps keep their minds active and working towards the charity’s next expedition, where the Defenders can be used with pride.
“It’s also pretty handy should there be a breakdown during expedition. Who better to fix a breakdown in the middle of nowhere than the team that rebuilt it with their own hands?”
The rebuild can be followed through Veterans In Action’s social media pages, and visit their website today to get involved.
