Without a doubt, the Land Rover Defender is one of the toughest SUVs available, as many were reminded when Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sent a fleet of the vehicles to the Alps as support vehicles for the Red Bull X-Alps adventure race.
Car & Bike magazine reports that the Defenders will be used as support vehicles, ferrying people and supplies around the adrenaline-fuelled extreme race, as well as acting as recovery vehicles for the competing athletes.
The Red Bull X-Alps was founded in 2003 and is a race across the Alps by foot and paraglider, It involves speed hiking, ultra-running, mountaineering, and flying.
The race takes place every two years, and last for 12 days. In 2021, 32 athletes will be attempting to cross more than 600 miles of alpine terrain. This includes hiking 30 miles with a vertical ascent of 5,000 metres, followed by paragliding in treacherous conditions.
JLR is supporting seven of the 32 competitors, and the Defender 110 will become their mobile home for the duration of the event, as well as carrying vital supplies and equipment. All the defenders will be fired with Autohome roof tents to allow the athletes to rest and recover.
The Autohome roof tent was developed by Land Rover back in 1958. The hard shell roof tent can be opened and closed easily and even comes with a mattress. Apart from the Roof Tent, these Defenders will also be equipped with:
- Land Rover’s Portable Rinse System
- Exterior Side-Mounted Gear Carriers
- Integrated Air Compressors
The Red Bull X-Alps adventure race is held from 20 June to 2 July this year.
